How to rent a room
Having a room is of course one of the most important necessities when you come to study in Delft. Most foreign students will be assisted by the university staff to get a place to stay. But there are also possibilities to move or find something by yourself.
Exchange students
Exchange students can ask the student advisor of the faculty for help first. If you have to find a room by yourself sign up at the Kamerwinkel and check the rooms available on the internet. Below you find more information to help you with your search.
Foreign master and PhD students
When you sign up to obtain (a part of) your education at Delft University of Technology you will be contacted by the Student Facility Center. In most cases they will make sure you have a room in Delft when you arrive.
Finding a room yourself
Most student rooms in Delft are offered via the ‘Room Shop’, ‘Kamerwinkel’ in Dutch. You can subscribe for free at the Kamerwinkel. Just visit the desk in the DUWO building at Kanaalweg 4 or call the Kamerwinkel and the form will be sent to you. After you have filled out the form you will receive a number of subscription. Then you can start searching. Check the DUWO site or pin walls in the Aula regularly to see if there’s a room available.
www.HousingAnywhere.com is a website on which students that go on exchange for a few months post their room, and incoming exchange students can respond on those rooms immediately. This website operates on a student-to-student basis, without intermediaries.
Applying for a room
When rooms become available in student houses the inhabitants invite all interested people to come and see the room. These evenings are called ‘instemmingen’ in Dutch. Depending on the room and the time of year, 5 to 40 applicants come for a room. The new roommate is chosen by the students living in the house. You can find the list of ‘instemmingen’ here. You have to be subscribed at the Kamerwinkel to apply for these rooms.
There are also private houses that offer rooms for which no ‘instemming’ is organised. These can be found here. When you want to apply, call the Kamerwinkel. You will be asked for your number of subscription. Another site with advertisements is www.kamernet.nl. This site is in Dutch, but some advertisements are in English.
If you rather have a student apartment on your own, call the Kamerwinkel for more information or to be placed on the waiting list. The time between the application and being offered an apartment may vary.
New roommate?
If you have a room left for rent you can add this to the list on the Duwo site. Facts about the person wanted or the amount of people that can be sent to your ‘instemming’ can also be noted here. If you want help you can always ask the Kamerwinkel. You can also put up a note at the desk in the Aula.
Trouble with your room?
If you have any complaints about your room, contact the Delft International Student Society (DISS) or send an email to the VSSD helpdesk.
