Aim of this thesis is to find a solution for the difficulties in improving flood protection structures and the redevelopment of an urban riverfront in the shared realm. Freedom in these processes is desired. However, urban functions and flood protection claim the same area of an urban riverfront. Both improvement of flood retaining structures and the redevelopment of an urban riverfront is a challenge.

The main objective of this thesis is therefore: 'To create and maintain synergy in an urban riverfront between the technical function of flood protection and urban functions, taking economic development and physical processes into account'.
